Chartered Clinical Psychologist (C.Psychol) and Associate Fellow (AFBPsS) of The British Psychological Society (BPS) and member of the Division of Clinical Psychology
I completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2004. During my training, I gained experience in working with clients across all age ranges and with a variety of psychological needs. Since qualifying, I have worked in Portsmouth City, with adults with severe, complex and longstanding mental health problems and personality disorders. I have worked across acute care settings (Crisis/ Home-Treatment and Inpatient/ Rehabilitation ward) and community (Outpatient) settings.
I am able to deliver a range of approaches to psychological treatment including
Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT- how thoughts and behaviours are linked to how we feel) and draw on Cognitive-Analytic Therapy (CAT) and systemic approaches (thinking about the relationships we have with ourselves and others). I also use mindfulness and compassion-based interventions to help clients let go of emotional suffering and build more accepting/ understanding ways of relating to themselves.
Whilst in the NHS, I was the Clinical Lead for the Autistic Spectrum Disorder Assessment and Diagnosis Service for Adults in Portsmouth. This was locally developed and delivered in line with The National Autism Strategy (Department of Health, 2010) to provide ‘gold standard’ autism and needs-based assessment to working age-adults.
For the last 10 years, I have specialised in assessing/ diagnosing Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and in delivering Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). I have also been involved in developing and delivering an Emotional Coping Skills treatment to clients who struggle with overwhelming emotions and who may engage in behaviours which are impulsive or self-limiting. I am also a Co-Founder of The DBT & Schema Therapy Clinic, a specialised clinic of Hampshire & Surrey Psychology.
As a senior (highly specialised) psychologist, I have over 12 years’ experience of applying evidence-based psychological treatments to assess, diagnose and treat a wide variety of psychological problems. These include: PTSD; anxiety disorders; depression; self-harm; suicidal and impulsive behaviours; eating disorders; non-epileptic seizure disorder; dissociation; OCD; body dysmorphic disorder and personality disorders. I am also able to offer formal cognitive testing to adults in order to support strengths and work with areas of difficulty in mental abilities. I am committed to helping clients relieve distress and promote psychological wellbeing. I provide brief and longer-term interventions, designed to address the unique needs of each client.
I have longstanding experience treating incident-specific and complex (multiple or longstanding trauma) in adults. I use cognitive-behavioural techniques (and Schema Therapy where necessary) to help clients understand their emotional responses to their traumatic experiences and regain confidence and functioning in their lives.
