Clinical Experience

My absolute passion and area of speciality is working with people who have experienced trauma, either a single incident traumatic event such as a road traffic accident or multiple traumas over time such as childhood abuse or domestic violence.  I am EMDR trained and have a vast experience of working with people who are traumatised and suffering with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD and dissociative disorders.  I have worked with combat PTSD whilst working for the Ministry of Defence providing psychological therapy for the armed forces.  I continue to work with veterans and have a specialist interest in working with emergency service personnel. I also work with people who have experienced a traumatic bereavement and are presenting with both PTSD symptoms and complex grief.

I have worked in the NHS since 2005, working in a range of clinical settings including adult and older adult mental health in both community and inpatient mental health services.  This has allowed me to gain experience of working with a wide range of mental health issues of varying complexities.  I have also spent a great deal of time working in neuropsychological services conducting assessments and providing psychological interventions for a number of different client groups such as; older adults with dementia, adults with acquired traumatic brain injury, adults with medication resistant epilepsy and adults first presenting with neurological difficulties.

After qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist from the University of Southampton I worked in primary care providing cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and EMDR to individuals with depression and anxiety disorders and supervising the trainees completing their CBT training.  From this role I moved to provide psychological therapies as part of secondary care adult mental health services. I worked with clients with severe, complex and chronic mental health difficulties such as personality disorders, psychosis, childhood abuse/complex trauma, dissociative disorders and complex co-morbid presentations. I also worked in the DBT service and provided supervision, consultation and training to the wider community team.  More recently I have been working to set-up the psychology service for an older adult NHS secondary care team.  I have established groups and provided consultation, training supervision to the team whilst also providing psychological input to clients.  My role has been to conduct memory and neuropsychological assessments for clients with dementia and other neurological disorders and psychological interventions for clients with severe depression, anxiety, PTSD and personality disorders.

Privately I work with clients who self-refer or who are referred via an insurance company or rehabilitation organisation.  I also provided medical-legal reports for court as an expert witness.  I use a range of psychological therapies to suit the needs of each individual.  I use Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR), Compassion Focussed Therapy, Mindfulness, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Schema Mode Therapy.  I provide psychological therapy for a wide range of mental health problems such as:

  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for single events (road traffic accidents, assault, traumatic childbirth) or multiple traumas (including childhood abuse, bullying, domestic violence and occupational traumas i.e. emergency services)
  • Combat Trauma
  • Traumatic bereavement/complex grief
  • Dissociation, dissociative disorders, depersonalization and derealisation
  • Functional neurological disorders (such as unexplained neurological symptoms and non-epileptic seizures).
  • Depression
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Health anxiety
  • Panic with or without agoraphobia
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Low Self Esteem
