I am a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with 18 years experience working in the NHS both in Paediatrics and Psychiatry.

I am able to offer assessment for all conditions, including specialist ADHD assessment. My particular interests are in the assessment and treatment of:

PTSD (Post traumatic Stress Disorder)

…or trauma symptoms such as flashbacks and nightmares that may arise from events such as abuse or bullying. After a thorough assessment if appropriate I am able to offer EMDR (Eye movement, desensitisation and reprocessing) therapy which is an evidence based treatment for trauma based symptoms.

OCD (Obsessive Compulsive disorder)

If diagnosed treatments offered include CBT with exposure and response prevention or if there is a traumatic trigger then EMDR can also be very helpful. If the presentation is severe and not able to respond to psychological treatment alone then medication can also be used alongside psychological treatment.

Depression and anxiety

I provide assessment and once a shared understanding of the problem has been established then treatment recommendations can be made. This may include psychological therapy either from myself or other psychologist colleagues can be recommended. If more severe and not responding to, or not ready to engage with psychological work then medication can be considered. If initiated then I will ensure that this is monitored and reviewed in order to find the most effective medication and dose to suit the young person.

Eating Disorders

If there is a high level of risk then it is advisable to be under an NHS eating disorders team in order to have access to a multidisciplinary team. However, having worked in local eating disorder teams I am aware that young people can often wait a long time for individual work which I can offer if indicated including CBT and EMDR which can be particularly helpful if there are trauma symptoms triggering the eating disorder or trauma symptoms relating to the experience of being in an inpatient unit.

As well as individual therapies and medication I am also trained in family therapy which can often be a helpful approach for a wide spectrum of difficulties. Whether working individually or with the family as a whole I will always seek to involve the family as much as possible as long as the young person is willing for information to be shared.

I am based at Rownhams House in Southampton but am also willing to carry out home visits if needed.
