About me

As a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with nearly 20 years’ experience within mental health services, I am extremely passionate about the work I do.  I am committed to enabling individuals to live a more fulfilling life, by helping them move in the direction of their values and goals.

I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist from the University of Southampton in 2011. This core training has laid a solid foundation for my career as a Clinical Psychologist and developing expertise.  My Clinical Psychology training enables me to work flexibly, adapting a broad range of approaches to the needs of a variety of client groups including children and adolescents, adults of working age, older adults and individuals with learning disabilities.  Following qualification, I have spent most of my career in various NHS adult Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs), progressing to Principal Clinical Psychologist.  Other post-qualification roles included working for an NHS IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) Service, an Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Service, and an inpatient Ministry of Defence Unit.

I now split my working life between working with Hampshire & Surrey Psychology, and also as a Clinical Supervisor of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) trainees at the University of Southampton (see Supervision).

The difficulties I work with are wide-ranging, and include (but are not limited to):

  • Anxiety Disorders (e.g. phobias, panic, OCD, social anxiety, health anxiety)
  • Depression
  • Low Self-esteem
  • Trauma
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (for single or multiple traumas)
  • Psychosis
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Emotion regulation difficulties

My approach

Throughout my career I hope to convey empathy, compassion and warmth, and provide a non-judgmental safe space for the individuals I see.  My practice is evidence-based and integrative; I predominantly draw upon Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).  I use a person-centred style, tailoring my approach to the needs of those I work with.

When we first meet, I will ask you to tell me about the difficulties that give you a sense of ‘stuckness’. You may feel trapped in a vicious cycle, unsure how to break it.  I will be guided by you to tell me what you want to get from therapy, and at what pace.  This space is just for you.  We both bring our own expertise to the therapy room; you bring your expertise of you, and I bring my expertise as a Clinical Psychologist. Together we can form an effective working partnership in understanding the difficulties, and move you forwards towards living your life more fully in accordance with what is important to you.

Although ideally we would meet face-to-face, I am able to offer remote therapy either via online video call systems, or by telephone.

Supervision

In addition to my clinical work, I am also pleased to be able to offer clinical supervision to professional colleagues.  I have experience of supervising (and using the CTS-R), and have recently been invited to join the University of Southampton CBT Programme team as a Supervisor for trainees undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced CBT.
